In 2018, it was announced that the government would be making steps to ban baby wipes in the UK because of their environmental effects. Before this announcement, I had no idea that baby wipes were bad for the environment at all! I have always considered myself quite a conscientious person when it comes to the environment, I recycle, I bring my own cup to coffee shops and take my own bags to buy groceries, I’ve always cared about our planet! In that moment though, it dawned on me that if I don’t have the information, how can I keep making the most sustainable choices?
I immediately started to do research into biodegradable baby wipes that I could buy instead of my harmful, big-brand product. I found out very quickly that it was not as easy as that. Most of the products I found were manufactured overseas with ingredients listed in another language. I also found other options that were affordable but could only be bought in bulk. The more research I did, the more I realized that information on different eco-friendly products was very difficult to find. Hours into my deep internet dive and I still hadn’t found a good option and I was about ready to give up completely.
This was the lightbulb moment. What if all the information that I needed was in one place? Better yet, what if I could buy everything I needed to live a more environmentally friendly lifestyle in that same place? I can’t be the only one that wants this, surely? In that moment New Footprint was born.
Over the past year or so, I have discovered how difficult information is to find for consumers. We live very busy lives and unless each consumer is willing to do hours of research, then the change that our planet desperately needs, will never actually happen. In order to make true change, we need to take advantage of the technology available to us and make this information easily accessible. Not just to people looking for the info, but for everyone that wants to help. Especially those who don’t know where to start!
Nowadays, with social media and 24 hour news cycles, we are seeing what our lifestyles are doing to the environment on a daily basis. We all want to help but how can we if we don’t know where to start?
The goal of New Footprint is to put an end to lack of knowledge and help consumers to make little changes that make a big difference. If we can support the small businesses that manufacture sustainable products, then these businesses can grow and flourish! The long-term goal is to create a positive spiral where the businesses sell more products, manufacture them in larger quantities and pass on the savings to the consumer. If the products are cheaper, more people will be able to buy the products and so the spiral continues. This spiral can have an enormously positive effect on the planet that we rely on, but it all starts with you.
We live in a consumer driven market which means we have the power to decide which brands survive and grow. Together we can ensure a bright future for the small (and large) businesses that dedicate their existence to ensuring a bright future for our planet by producing sustainable and environmentally friendly alternatives.
We are currently a very small team that are hoping to make a big impact! We gone to great lengths to ensure all of the information on this site is as accurate as possible. WWF have kindly allowed us to use their facts about animals but the information you find on single-use plastics is based entirely on our own extensive research and fact checking. With that being said, if you notice anything that you think might not be correct, please let us know and we can make sure to look into things a little further! We are hoping that over time we can become the most reliable source for this information online and we can get there faster with your help!
Take a look around the site and if you’re still skeptical, just give it a chance! After all, anything that will benefit the environment is worth an open mind, right? Once you’ve explored the site, we know you’ll love it! Just remember, change starts with you. Small changes can make a big difference!
